To prevent pipes in your house from freezing, do not let the temperature in the house dip below freezing. Also, any pipes exposed to the cold should be insulated. Pipes will freeze if they are exposed to temperatures below freezing. If they freeze, it will be awhile for them to gradually warm. Therefore, it will take some time for you to have running water again. But, they could also burst, causing a mess and a large repair bill.
Pump your septic tank every five years to keep it working well. This keeps the tank from developing a buildup of sediment, thereby preventing the septic system from backing up or failing altogether as a result. While you may find it costly to get your septic tank cleaned out, the cost is much higher to have sewage and backups cleaned up and your septic tank repaired or replaced.
Don’t be tempted to use commercial bleach tablets, blue toilet tablets or any other product that claims to prevent toilet odor. These tablets have chemicals that can damage rubber parts that are essential to the proper functioning of your toilet.
If your toilet happens to be clogged, and the plunger is not working, you can pour a bucket of hot water down the toilet, but be sure to pour it from a height that is waist level or above so you do not flood the bathroom. After the water level in the toilet bowl has gone down, you can repeat the procedure until the blockage is cleared.
Frequently inspect the floors around toilets for softness; this can tell you whether or not the floors are damaged. Do this by straddling the commode and rocking from side to side. You are looking for any feelings of weakness or softening of the floor itself. You can save a lot if you catch these issue sooner.
Make sure there is a strainer covering all drains in order to collect particles that would cause a clog if they went down the drain. The strainer used in the kitchen will need to be cleaned frequently. The bathtub’s strainers need to cleaned out on a regular basis.
Pour equal parts baking soda followed by vinegar down your bathtub drain once a month. Use a plug or rag to cover the drain, because there will be a chemical reaction in the pipes. Allow some time to pass, then follow up by pouring down boiling hot water. Although this is useful for clearing away simple clogs made of hair and soap debris, it will not work for serious blockages.
